The Michigan City Wolves hosted rival LaPorte yesterday in a Duneland Athletic Conference match. The Slicers came away with a 4-1 varsity win, though several Wolves turned in gritty performances against strong competition. At No. 1 singles, Riley Emshwiller-Sowards gave City its lone varsity victory with a composed 6-2, 6-3 win, using consistent groundstrokes to keep control throughout the match. At No. 2 singles, Jacob Hazel played through extended rallies before falling 6-1, 6-3. Carson Groszek dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles. In doubles, the Wolves battled hard. At No. 1 doubles, Thomas Chatfield and Nic Williams fell 6-1, 6-0 against a sharp LaPorte pairing. At No. 2 doubles, Eli Green and Zach Williams pushed their opponents to a second-set tiebreak before coming up just short, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). On the junior varsity side, LaPorte took each match. Jaren Swindell, Aeden Phillips, and Finn Hendricks all competed at singles, while the doubles team of Joey Stinchcomb and Trenton Vittatoe rounded out play. With the result, Michigan City now holds a season record of 8-5 overall and will look to regroup as they continue their conference schedule tomorrow against Merrillville.
